UFC 122 REVIEW PART 6: THE PRELIMS

SETH PETRUZELLI VS. KARLOS VEMOLA

Vemola's strategy is painfully evident from the very beginning. He wants to take Petruzelli down and use his impressively massive frame to his advantage by raining down ground and pound and finishing the fight.

He charges in like a bull at the sound of the bell and, when he eventually grabs hold of Petruzelli, viciously slams him onto the mat. Petruzelli immediately manages to get back up, though, but Vemola is persistent and just charges in to grab hold once again and slams his opponent to the mat. Petruzelli counters, though, and attempts a Triangle Choke, but is unable to lock it in.

Karlos Vemola rushes Seth Petruzelli
Petruzelli's back up on his feet, but is unable to shake the grip of the gorilla known as Vemola. Vemola jumps on his back and Petruzelli willingly drops down to the ground instead of wanting to carry that monster on his back standing. This is the beginning of the end for Petruzelli, unfortunately, as Vemola begins his ground and pound rain slowly, but steadily, and builds up to a barrage of hammer fists that ends the fight.

KRIS MCCRAY VS. CARLOS EDUARDO ROCHA

Carlos Rocha submits Kris McCray
Both seemed to want to get it down to the ground very early in the fight, with McCray possibly wanting to finish with some vicious ground and pound and Rocha with a submission of some sort. After some back and forth on the mat in terms of dominating positioning, Rocha manages to get hold of McCray's left leg and successfully administer a knee bar.  He wins the fight via submission 2:21 into the fight.

VLADIMIR MATYUSHENKO VS. ALEXANDRE FERREIRA

Vladmir Matyushenko ground and pounds Alexandre Ferreira
Matyushenko's coming off a devastating loss against Jon Jones in UFC Live, so he badly needs to win this fight. Critics have been saying that he's now too old and washed up, so he needs to rack up some wins to show his relevancy in the sport. The fight starts off as a stand up battle until Matyushenko takes Ferreira down to the ground. From here, he administered some ground and pound that quickly won him the fight. Clean and simple, and, eerily enough, a bit similar to how Jones finished him. He wins the fight 2:20 into the first round by TKO.
